At Los Angeles Pacific University, many students bring with them a depth of life experience that shapes not only their education, but their purpose. For Cody, a veteran with over a decade of military service, that journey has been defined by resilience, faith, and a calling to serve others in their most difficult moments.

A Life of Service, Built Through Experience

Cody’s path began in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a culinary specialist. During his time, he worked on multiple ships, supported large-scale operations, and trained fellow service members helping improve both morale and the quality of daily life for his crew.

But his journey didn’t stop there.

He later joined the California Air National Guard at Point Mugu, serving on the Fatality Search and Recovery Team (FSRT) for nine years becoming one of the longest-serving members in the nation. Across nearly 11 years of total service, Cody deployed overseas and responded to major crises at home, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’ve walked through a mix of experiences that weren’t easy,” Cody shares. “But I truly believe God used each one to build me into the man I am today.”

A Calling That Changed Everything

During the COVID-19 response, Cody was assigned to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, an experience that would ultimately shape his future.

Working closely with investigators, he witnessed firsthand the compassion, professionalism, and responsibility required to support families during some of their most difficult moments.

That experience sparked something deeper.

It wasn’t just about career advancement, it was about stepping into a role that serves others with dignity and purpose.

Today, Cody is pursuing his Master of Arts in Public Administration at LAPU, with the goal of growing into a leadership role where he can make a meaningful impact in his field and community.

Making Education Possible Through Veteran Benefits

Cody’s educational journey has been supported by the benefits he earned through his service.

Using his active-duty GI Bill, he completed his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and is now applying the remainder toward his graduate studies.

“The GI Bill made it possible for me to keep going,” Cody explains. “And with LAPU’s military discount, I know I’ll be able to continue even after those benefits run out.”

He also credits LAPU’s transfer-friendly approach for helping him accelerate his progress.

By transferring prior college credits and military training, Cody was able to complete his bachelor’s degree in just two years, putting him on a faster path toward his goals.

Finding Balance Through Online Learning

For Cody, the flexibility of LAPU’s online format has been transformative.

“Being an online student at LAPU has honestly given me my life back.”

Without the demands of commuting or rigid schedules, he’s been able to work full-time, support his family, and continue his education all while staying present in the moments that matter most.

The ability to learn on his own time has also allowed him to integrate his education into his daily life, even discussing coursework with his wife and applying what he’s learning in real-world contexts.

Overcoming Challenges with Purpose

Balancing school and full-time work hasn’t come without its challenges.

Cody recalls a year spent working 12-hour night shifts, often carrying the weight of responsibility alone during critical hours. Transitioning from those intense shifts into academic work required discipline, resilience, and mental strength.

There were moments of doubt but never a loss of purpose.

“I kept reminding myself why I started. It was to build a better future for my family and put myself in a position to make a real impact.”

His faith, his family, and his commitment to serving others became the foundation that carried him forward.

A Message to Fellow Veterans

Cody’s message to other veterans considering going back to school is clear:

“Don’t underestimate what you’re capable of. You’ve already overcome more than most people ever will.”

He encourages veterans to take advantage of the benefits they’ve earned, like the GI Bill, and to build a structure that supports both their goals and their well-being.

“Make space for your family, your faith, and the things that keep you grounded. That balance is what keeps you moving forward.”

Continuing the Mission

Cody’s journey is a powerful reminder that education isn’t just about earning a degree, it’s about stepping into purpose.

Through his experiences in the military and beyond, he’s built a foundation rooted in service, resilience, and compassion. And through LAPU, he’s continuing to grow into a leader who will serve his community when it matters most.

For veterans considering their next step, Cody’s story is proof:

Your experience matters. Your benefits can open doors. And your next chapter is still yours to write.
