  • FAFSA Simplification Act | Los Angeles Pacific University

Learn about the FAFSA Simplification Act and how it impacts federal student aid. Find out key changes, new requirements, and what students need to know at LAPU. FAFSA Simplification Act What’s Changing Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID Beginning with the 2024-25 FAFSA, all users/contributors must have an FSA ID and password to fill out the FAFSA, even those who don’t have a Social Security Number (SSN). Those without a SSN, however, cannot yet create an FSA ID. We expect this access to become available around the same time the FAFSA is released. Processing your FSA ID can take up to 5 business days, so we recommend creating it at least a week before you start your FAFSA. Contributors : A contributor refers to anyone who is required to provide information on a student’s FAFSA, including the student, the student’s spouse, a biological or adopted parent, or the parent’s spouse. Being a contributor does not imply responsibility for the student’s college costs. You, the student, will need the contributor’s name, date of birth, Social Security Number (SSN), and email address to invite them to complete the required portion of your FAFSA. Contributors will need to provide personal and financial information on their section of your FAFSA. They will be able to see and complete only their own specific section of your FAFSA. All contributors must provide consent to have their federal tax information transferred directly from the IRS to the FAFSA. If consent is not provided by all parties, you will not be eligible for federal financial aid. In previous years, transferring IRS data was optional; moving forward, it’s required. Which Parent to Use in Divorced/Separated Situations: If your parents are divorced or separated, the contributing parent(s) is the parent (and their spouse, if remarried) who provided the greater portion of your financial support during the 12 months immediately prior to filing the FAFSA. It no longer will default to the parent you primarily lived with during the past 12 months. Family Size and Number in College: The number of people in your family will be automatically pulled in from your federal tax information. The number of family members in college will still be asked on the FAFSA, but it will be excluded from the federal, state, and institutional financial aid calculation. Small Business and Farm Assets: The net worth of any small business and/or farm assets must be included on the FAFSA. Remember, net worth = asset value – asset debt. Terminology: EFC > SAI The final figure calculated by the FAFSA will no longer be called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Rather, it will be called the Student Aid Index (SAI) to more accurately describe how that number is used to determine financial aid eligibility. Student Aid Report (SAR) > FAFSA Submission Summary Similarly, the SAR, which is the confirmation of what’s been submitted, will now be referred to as the FAFSA Submission Summary.

  • What We Believe | Los Angeles Pacific University

Discover the mission, faith, and values that define Los Angeles Pacific University. Learn about our commitment to faith, life, and learning, as well as our dedication to diversity, inclusion, and academic freedom. What We Believe At Los Angeles Pacific University, those who learn together form the fabric of our Christ-centered university community. Mission-Driven Community Shared values, mutual respect, and hospitality are cherished attributes that each member helps build and works hard to safeguard. We do not take this responsibility lightly and remain grateful to be part of the educational plurality of the great state of California. Faith integration, student care, service, diversity, and religious expression combine to form the essence of our mission-driven community. Commitment to Faith, Life, and Learning Los Angeles Pacific University teaches and serves from a Christian worldview through a holistic understanding and practice of promoting faith, life, and learning. We believe the entire LAPU community is called to contribute to cultivating hope through learning and we accomplish this through our core values of being Exemplary, Caring, and focused on Learning. We are committed to preparing individuals not only with the skills and attitudes to thrive in their community and workplace, but also to point the way to something bigger — to the ultimate hope that is in Jesus Christ. As it relates to students, LAPU conceives the promotion of faith, life, and learning as engaging students in learning (through curriculum design, instruction, and student support) that reflects the Christian worldview of LAPU and culminates in the realization of hope in our students. As a result of this process (through their interactions and study at LAPU) our students will be able to: apply a Christian worldview to their life and work in the world; articulate how and in what ways their life journeys connect to God’s story; engage with diverse faith perspectives within the learning community at LAPU; and, recognize God’s work in the world through all academic disciplines. Learn more about Faith, Life, and Learning at LAPU. Religious Expression The precious freedom to express our religious tenets is recognized by the United States and California Constitutions. Other federal and state laws likewise support the opportunity for Los Angeles Pacific University and other religious higher education institutions to weave religious beliefs into all aspects of university life. For example, exemptions in Title IX (20 U.S.C. section 1681(a)(3)) and the California Equity in Higher Education Act (Cal. Ed. Code section 66271) support Los Angeles Pacific’s efforts to operate consistently with its religious tenets by maintaining faith-based standards of behaviors that all community members voluntarily agree to follow as a condition of living and learning in our community. These laws provide Los Angeles Pacific and other religious institutions with the discretion to thoughtfully make policies and build community expectations around our mission to advance the work of God in the world through academic excellence and to help students develop a Christian perspective on truth and life. Statement of Faith As an educational institution with a Wesleyan tradition at its core, it seems natural to us to embrace a statement of faith that is common among many Christian traditions. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative word of God. We believe that there is one God, creator of heaven and earth, eternally existent in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, and in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return to power and glory. We believe in the fall and consequent total moral depravity of humanity, resulting in our exceeding sinfulness and lost estate, and necessitating our regeneration by the Holy Spirit. We believe in the present and continuing ministry of sanctification by the Holy Spirit by whose infilling the believing Christian is cleansed and empowered for a life of holiness and service. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; those who are saved to the resurrection of life and those who are lost to the resurrection of damnation. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. Statement of Academic Freedom At Los Angeles Pacific University, we believe that all truth is God’s truth and that God has made it possible for humankind to access, discover, and understand truth. We also affirm that the knowledge of truth will always be incomplete and that people, including those with educational credentials, are fallible and may interpret data and ideas imperfectly. Therefore, academic freedom from a Christ-centered perspective must be carried out with civility, mature judgment, and the awareness of the broad representation of Christian faith that exists within this institution. Accordingly, LAPU affirms its commitment to freedom of inquiry and expression in academic endeavors. The university recognizes that academic freedom has historically been defined both by broadly accepted academic standards and by the mission and character of the institution in which it is practiced. LAPU seeks to maintain an academic community in which lecturers are free to engage in rigorous scholarly inquiry and expression within an intellectual context shaped by the evangelical Christian tradition. In addition to this freedom, LAPU seeks to pursue scholarly inquiry and expression in a way that extends and enriches the academic disciplines from the unique resources provided by the institution’s identity. Thus, at LAPU, academic freedom is defined both by the commonly accepted standards of the academy and by those commitments articulated in the documents that are central to the university’s identity as a Christian university. These documents articulate the central commitments which shape the academic community, and thus the practice of academic freedom, at LAPU: a belief in God as the Creator of all things, in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, in the Holy Spirit as teacher and guide, in Scripture as God’s authoritative and infallible revelation, and in the Christian community as an expression and vehicle of God’s redemptive work in this world. The university follows these principles in its practice of academic freedom: Lecturers are entitled to the rights and privileges and bear the obligations, of academic freedom in the performance of their duties. Specifically, lecturers are free to pursue truth and knowledge within their disciplines in the classroom, in their research and writings, and in other public statements in their field of professional competence. At all times lecturers should strive for accuracy, exercise appropriate restraint, and show respect for the opinions of others. Lecturers are entitled to freedom in the classroom in discussing their subject. Lecturers should be careful not to introduce into their teaching controversial matter which has no relation to the subject. While lecturers are members of the global community, as scholars and members of the LAPU community, lecturers should remain cognizant that the public will form perceptions of their profession and their institution by their utterances. In the practice of the academic vocation, complaints against lecturers may be generated. Lecturers shall be protected from any request to retract or modify their research, publication, or teaching merely because a complaint has been received. Only complaints alleging lecturers’ violations of professional standards of the discipline or of advocating positions incompatible with the central commitments of LAPU as a Christian university shall be considered, and then only when the evidence supporting the allegation is more substantial than a rumor, inference, or hearsay. In the event that a lecturer believes his or her academic freedom has been unduly restricted, he or she may pursue resolution of this issue through the existing lecturer grievance procedure as articulated in the Academic Handbook. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that students and their families complete to apply for federal financial aid to help pay for college. It’s the initial step in accessing federal grants and loans. Completing the FAFSA is free and can lead to various types of financial aid, some of which are grants that don’t need to be repaid. WHAT IS THE FEDERAL SCHOOL CODE FOR LOS ANGELES PACIFIC UNIVERSITY (LAPU)? The LAPU federal school code is 042788. WHY HAVE I BEEN SELECTED FOR VERIFICATION? Verification is the process used to confirm that the data reported on your FAFSA is accurate. Some FAFSA applications are selected because of inconsistent information, and others are chosen randomly. WHY WAS I SELECTED FOR UNUSUAL ENROLLMENT HISTORY (UEH)? UEH is a flag used by the U.S. Department of Education to identify students who have received federal student aid (like Pell Grants or direct loans) from multiple institutions within the past four academic years. This flag is intended to help prevent fraud and abuse in title IV student aid programs. WILL I QUALIFY FOR FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID THROUGH THE FAFSA? To qualify for financial aid through the FAFSA, you must meet the following criteria: Be enrolled as a student in an eligible degree or certificate program of study. Be a U.S. citizen or Eligible Non-Citizen. Must have a valid Social Security Number (SSN). Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Must not be in default on Federal Student Loans or owe money on a Federal Grant. WHAT IS SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS (SAP)? SAP refers to the requirement that students receiving financial aid maintain satisfactory academic performance to remain eligible for those funds. This means successfully completing coursework and progressing toward a degree or certificate within a reasonable timeframe. WHAT IS RETURN TO TITLE IV (R2T4)? R2T4 refers to the federal requirement that institutions calculate and return unearned Title IV funds to the U.S. Department of Education when a student withdraws from school before completing 60% of the payment period. HOW WILL DROPPING OR WITHDRAWING FROM ONE OR MORE CLASSES AFFECT MY FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBILITY? Dropping or withdrawing from classes can affect financial aid eligibility by potentially requiring a return of funds and impacting future aid awards. If you drop below half-time enrollment, you may have to repay a portion of your aid and could lose eligibility for future grants or scholarships. If you are considering dropping or withdrawing from one or more classes, you are strongly encouraged to contact your Success Coach regarding academic impact or Student Financial Services regarding potential financial impact. Unfortunately, we may not be able to tell you exactly what the financial impact will be if you withdraw because we have to wait for our financial aid office run the R2T4 calculation to determine what portion of aid you have earned and what portion will need to be returned. WHAT TYPE OF TITLE IV FINANCIAL AID CAN I GET THROUGH THE FAFSA? Title IV funds are federal student aid funds, which are from federal student aid programs administered by the U.S. Department of Education. Title IV funds include Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan, Direct Graduate PLUS Loan, Direct Parent PLUS Loan, Federal Pell Grant, and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG). The FAFSA is also used to administer the California state grants. HOW MUCH IN FEDERAL DIRECT LOANS WILL I BE OFFERED? LAPU awards students based upon the grade level, Student Aid Index (SAI) from the FAFSA and Cost Of Attendance (COA). See the LAPU Catalog (https://www.lapu.edu/resources/academic-catalog)for more details for the COA. You can also use the Net Price Calculator (https://npc.collegeboard.org/app/lapacificu)to give you an early indication of how much and what types of financial aid you might qualify for. HOW DOES MY INCOME AFFECT MY FINANCIAL AID OFFER? The FAFSA uses your income (and your family’s, if applicable) to calculate your Student Aid Index (SAI), which is a measure of how much your family is expected to contribute toward your education. I COMPLETED A FAFSA BEFORE AND GOT STUDENT LOANS. DO I HAVE TO SUBMIT IT AGAIN? Yes. You must complete a new FAFSA for every academic year that you wish to receive loans. The FAFSA form must be completed each year, as soon as October 1, for the academic year you plan to attend and apply for student aid. If you completed a FAFSA for the current academic year for another school, and you are transferring to LAPU, you will need to go back to the FAFSA website and add LAPU to your existing FAFSA. HOW DO I GET STARTED ON THE FEDERAL STUDENT LOAN PROCESS? To begin the federal student loan process, first complete and submit the FAFSA. This application determines your eligibility for federal student loans, grants, and other forms of financial aid. After submitting the FAFSA, LAPU will send you a financial aid offer, which may include federal student loans. In the financial aid offer, there will be instructions how to complete the Loan Entrance Counseling and the Master Promissory Note. HOW DO I ACCEPT OR DECLINE MY AWARD? LAPU has a “passive acceptance” policy in regards to the Federal Direct Loans. That means we assume you are accepting the full amount of your offer unless you tell us otherwise. If you would like to decline all or a portion of your offer, you will need to submit the Loan Adjustment Form (https://studentservices.lapu.edu/ICS/Registrar/Forms_and_Petitions.jnz?portlet=EX_FormFlow_-_Forms&screen=FormView&form=bd6cf284-3a0b-401c-a600-d9f17b9e7d8c)through your student portal.(https://studentservices.lapu.edu/ICS/FA_Resources/) I DON’T WANT TO BORROW FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS FOR BOOKS AND LIVING EXPENSES. CAN I BORROW JUST ENOUGH TO PAY FOR TUITION? Yes. If you would like to only borrow enough to cover your tuition charges, you will need to submit the Loan Adjustment Form (https://studentservices.lapu.edu/ICS/Registrar/Forms_and_Petitions.jnz?portlet=EX_FormFlow_-_Forms&screen=FormView&form=bd6cf284-3a0b-401c-a600-d9f17b9e7d8c)through your student portal.(https://studentservices.lapu.edu/ICS/FA_Resources/) Federal Direct Loans are funds that must be repaid. We encourage all students to borrow wisely and only borrow what is needed to cover their tuition charges. WHAT ARE FEDERAL STUDENT LOAN ORIGINATION FEES? The origination fees are an expense for borrowing a Federal Direct Loan. It is a percentage that is subtracted from each loan disbursed by the Federal Direct Lending Program. WHY IS MY AWARDED LOAN AMOUNT GREATER THAN MY DISBURSED LOAN AMOUNT? Federal Stafford loans are awarded for a gross amount and are disbursed to your student account in a net amount after the loan origination fees have been deducted. HOW CAN I FIND MY OUTSTANDING LOAN AND WHAT LENDERS HOLD THE LOANS? You can access your information in the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) by logging into your account on StudentAid.gov.(https://studentaid.gov) This involves using your FSA ID (username) and password. Within your StudentAid.gov account, you can find details about your federal student loans, including amounts, outstanding balances, and loan statuses. HOW DO I DEFER MY OLD STUDENT LOANS? If you are enrolled in an eligible program at least half-time, in most cases your loan will be placed into a deferment automatically. If you were enrolled at least half-time at your previous school but did not automatically receive a deferment, you should contact your loan servicer to notify them of your status. If they request that you fill out an in-school deferment request form, please contact the LAPU Office of the Registrar at (626) 624-4673 or registrar@lapu.edu (mailto:registrar@lapu.edu)for assistance. HOW DO I REQUEST A BOOK VOUCHER? You can request a book voucher by completing the form in the Student Services portal via my.lapu.edu.(https://my.lapu.edu/login/) New students can request a book voucher for the first session they attend. Continuing students can request a book voucher for the first session only. It is expected that the refund check will be received prior to the start of the second session and books will need to be purchased using the excess funds in the refund check. WHY DO I HAVE AN EXCESS OF TITLE IV FUNDS ON MY STUDENT ACCOUNT? Excess Title IV funds occur when the total amount of Title IV aid funds disbursed to your student account for the academic period exceeds THE charges for tuition for the same academic period. WHAT IF I HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED MY REFUND CHECK FOR THE SEMESTER AND THEN I WITHDRAW? If you completely withdraw from all classes and have already received your refund check, you may end up owing the university a balance after the calculation is performed. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to tell you what that exact amount is until the calculation is performed. Keep in mind if you have already received your refund check, you may have to pay back LAPU a portion of that refund check. WHAT CAN I USE MY REFUND FOR? A Title IV refund, which is excess federal financial aid, can be used for various purposes. It can be used to pay down student loans, or it can be applied to other educational expenses like tuition or the cost of purchasing a computer. Additionally, it can be used to cover future college expenses by depositing it into a savings account. Apply Today The online application is free and only takes a few minutes.
